Central London was buzzing. Champagne flowed; Black Tie was derigeur; medals gleamed; the Armed Forces looked distinguished in their military dress; and the ladies simply looked glamorous. The London Military Band began proceedings with stirring music; nails were bitten and fingers crossed…yes, the 2018 SoldieringOn Awards were under way.
Luckily the Healthcare and Rehabilitation Award, (in recognition of a person or team who have made a major contribution in the treatment of ill health or injury, or provided exceptional skill and commitment to healthcare treatment, recovery and rehabilitation of serving and former members of the Armed Forces Community) and sponsored by Redwood Technologies was one of the first to be announced, so the Back on Track team did not have to hold their breath for too long.
Anticipation turned to joy as it was announced that our Patron, Dr.Aamer Khan had won the Individual Award, and amid cheers, tears and noisy applause he was escorted to the stage to receive his Trophy from the hosts for the night… Jeremy Vine and Vicki Michelle. After that it was a blur until soprano, Carly Paoli, led us all in an emotional rendition of We’ll Meet Again.
It was a truly wonderful evening. We heard some inspiring stories in all categories and, without doubt, all finalists fully deserved their place at this event which recognises and celebrates the talent and enterprising skills of full time serving, reservists and former members of the Armed Forces, along with all those who support this community.
